Unfortunately, Michigan students continue to perform below the national average in literacy - https://www.bridgemi.com/.../michigan-test-scores-lag...
However, CCS is taking proactive steps to ensure our students rise above!
Here’s how we’re strengthening literacy at Cornerstone Christian School:
1. Literacy Specialist – In November, a literacy specialist observed our classrooms and praised our staff, saying, “If I had school-age children, I wouldn’t hesitate to send them to CCS.” She continues to work with us as we improve our literacy instruction.
2. DIBELS Assessment – Since March, we’ve been using DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), a quick, one-minute screening tool for K–8 students. Administered three times a year, it tracks reading progress, informing us on how to help our students. It also aligns with Michigan’s Dyslexia Law.
3. Science of Reading PD – Our teachers are participating in professional development focused on evidence-based science of reading and writing, with immediate application and ongoing assessment in the classroom.
4. Teachers use information from DIBELS, NWEA Assessments, Spelling Inventories, and other tools to create a literacy snapshot for each student—helping them personalize instruction and support every child’s growth.
"We are grateful for our dedicated teachers who are committed to meeting Michigan’s literacy challenges head-on, ensuring CCS students become strong readers and writers," says Dr. Vicki Kloosterhouse, Head of School.
